My name is Wallace Chapman and I am writing you from Atlanta Georgia. I just wanted to ask your advice on having some artwork published. I am trying to help a new artist get started distributing prints from original oil paintings. The orignal canvas size is 30x40 inches, but we want to use a standard print size for framing purposes.
I have talked with local printers to get an estimate of how much it would cost to print each one. Early estimates have been around $950-$1000 dollars to get the film and a proof of the print. As explained to me, they would then proceed to make a plate and then go ahead with the actual prints, costing another $1000 or so.
I'm not sure how art distributors handle the process. I've heard that they provide the actual prints and the artist gets a certain percentage of whats sold
or something.
The artist is Robert Chapman, and he has about ten(10) oil paintings that he will need to be printed. Robert has been received here in Atlanta very well, so well in fact, that he was asked to do the family portrait of Richard pryor and his immediate family. He has had a lot of interest from gallery owners, but we are not sure of the route to take to have prints made.
Any suggestions you may have as to:
1. Printers, either local or in another state that you can recommend.
2. Recommended or standard paper stock to use for the prints.
3. Publishers that you familiar with or who can be of assistance.
4. The average prices to get a color print made and the best quantity for startup.
5. How do most artist get started in the print industry coming from the original work, do they use distributors, publishers or do all the work themselves.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give !
PS: look for a web page featuring artwork by Robert Chapman soon, I will keep you updated. You can see one example located on the website http://www.voicenet.com/~lynsilk/thejoint.htm. This is an excellent site by a professional African American woman.
Wallace Chapman.
