From the New Orleans area, Samella Lewis has carried on the tradition of documenting Afro-American art history after Alain Locke and James A. Porter. She graduated from Hampton Institute and received her M.A. degree and a PhD., from Ohio State University. Awards received include a Delta Sigma Theta Scholarhip at Dillard University, a Curr Scholarship from the State University of Iowa, a Hampton Institute Art Scholarsip, an American University Scholarship from Ohio State University, a Fulbright Grant for Far Eastern Research and Travel, a New York State-Ford Foundation Grant in Chinese Art in History at New York University, and a post-graduate doctoral grant from N.D.E.A.

Her works are included in the following collections: Wesport Foundation & Gallery ( James A. & Dorothy Porter Wesley Archives), Baltimore Museum of Fine Arts, Biringia Museum of Fine ARts, High Museum of Atlanta, Ohio Union Gallery, Viktor Lowenfeld Memorial Gallery at Pennsylvania State University, Atlanta University Museum of Contemporary Art, Gallery at Pennsylvania State University, Atlanta University Museum of Contemporary Art, Denison University, Hampton Institute, Boys College, Amon, Jordan.

She's known as a painter, printmaker and art historian. She is currently Associate Professor, School of Humanities and Fine Arts, California State College, Dominquez Hills, Californa. She's the Editor (and the creator) of The INTERNATIONAL REVIEW OF AFRICAN AMERICAN ART.

Her publications include Black Artists on Art, a two volume set by Lewis and Ruth Waddy; Art: African American; and African American Art and Artrists.
